"Thus begins the saga of Po Nim the Shar Pei
Shipped away from his home in China far away
Bound for a foreign shore accidentally being on a ship
Sailing to a place called America which is quite a trip
Landing in a city named San Francisco
Where lots of visitors come and go
Following is the first of adventures of Pu Nim on the roam
Trying to find his mother and siblings left way back home
We will encounter people and animals and places
Having exotic names and tails and faces
Join him as around the world he goes
Making sure we all have clean toes"
With Momma and me with siblings three
Life is peaceful and we are roaming free
Sniffing and smelling and seeing wondrous sights by the sea
On a warm summer day we are happy as can be
Living by the ocean is really lots of fun
On dry and wet sand you can romp and run
Climbing on stones weighing more than a ton
Jumping in the water when there is too much sun
Overhead we see geese that honk and fly in a flock
Then diving down they land on a great big rock
We romp our way to the busy dock
That stays open all around the clock
So many ships all crowded together in the port
For containers and cargo and fishing and sport
Coming and going to city and resort
Too many places for me to sort
From the spot where I sat
I thought I saw a big rat
Or was it just a regular cat
Either way I will chase after that
Running so fast on the dock that into the water I almost slip
Luckily holding on to the edge with a very tight grip
Racing from the pier right up the ramp and on to a big ship
Just then the ship starts moving...Oh! Oh!...maybe on a long trip?
People call me Pu-Nim because that is my name
I hardly bark and I am quite tame
I live with my companion Gerard and his family
We all get along harmoniously
My breed is Shar Pei
My ancestors are from China which is very far away
They sit in temple all day
Guarding people who come to pray
This is my home and this is my seat
I am in a spot that is pretty neat
From the living room window I can see up the street
Watching some kids rollerblading
While others are baseball card trading
Another group sitting on the stoop
Viewing a basketball going through the hoop
In spring season
I am glad for many a reason
Because we get more time in the park
Before it gets too dark
To be outside is lots more fun
I love to sniff and bounce and run
During the day when Gerard is away
I have dog friends with whom I play
An American Toy Terrier
Whose name is Jennifer
She is small while others prefer
Her older brother Javier
Who is a bit heavier
And even merrier
Wow there goes the terrier from Boston
Whose name is Austin
With a personality that is great
Well mannered and eager to cooperate
And my best friend the American Cocker Spaniel
Who likes to be called Daniel
He is affectionate and gentle and swell
And I have never heard him yell
When Gerard comes home from school
His mother has a rule
That before he can go out and play
He has to do his homework for the next day
And to make sure the work is right
They always review it at night
Sometimes we go to the usual places
Seeing familiar tails and faces
Once in a while we explore
Places we have never been before
On a Summer day we take the train to Brighton Beach
This place in Brooklyn is far to reach
After walking through the turn style
We are on the train for awhile
I know we are there
By the change of the smell in the air
And the feel of clean warm sand
Is really very grand
To have ocean and wave and foam
Crashing on the beach as I roam
Coney Island is next to Brighton Beach
Getting there is a quick reach
With lots of rides and board walks and food stands
We can hear music from real live bands
Today we are going to a place called the Statue of Liberty
This is the symbol of America "The Home of the Free"
Given by the country of France
As a memory of their alliance
During the American Revolution
When there was less pollution
To lower Manhattan we go by train
To take the ferry boat on this lovely day with no rain
We are up close next to Miss Liberty
She seems taller than the biggest tree
We climb up inside her head and look through
To get a magnificent skyscraper view
This must be Chinatown
People say it is world renown
Sights and smells are really different
Even the dogs bark with a foreign accent
The Autumn atmosphere
Is very crisp and very clear
The leaves are turning red orange yellow and brown
All over the country and even in town
Trees are preparing for their winter sleep
For their good health they want to keep
This must be the middle of Manhattan
The other Boros are The Bronx Queens Brooklyn and the Island of Staten
We are in a big tall building called The Empire State
The view from the top is supposed to be great
The elevator goes up so fast
That I worry my kidneys may not last
About one hundred floors go by
We must be way up in the sky
This view from the top is superb
People look like ants on the curb
Central Park has many trees in all directions
I am exhausted from so many selections
It is a big treat
Sniffing the different dogs I meet
A great looking Chinook
Introduces herself as Brook
She likes pulling sleds when it snows
And has very cushioned toes
An Alaskan Malamute
Says his name is Knute
He is very astute
Big and friendly and never a brute
This American Water Spaniel
Wants to be called Nathaniel
He likes to go in the water to fetch duck
Even when he gets stuck in the muck
But the strangest thing that I have found
Are horses going up and down and around and around
Carrousel is its name
Close to where we get off the train
In one spot of the park is the Museum of Natural History
For me the admission is free
They have such things as a dinosaur
The hugest creature I ever saw
They also show people from other places
Of different colors and shapes of faces
such things as a dinosaur
The hugest creature I ever saw
They also show people from other places
Of different colors and shapes of faces
To visit the nearby zoo
Is what Gerard wants to do
I see lots of creatures
With all kinds of features
Some have a big hose for a nose
While others hang from their toes
After a meal and a rest we start
To go through The Metropolitan Museum of Art
With paintings and sculptures galore
There are lots of rooms to explore
With so many priceless things all over the place
I have to be careful not to leave a trace
Even though things may be pretty to see
Personally between you and me
I would rather be outside romping free
In winter it is wet and cold
My bones feel a little old
No one wants to take me for a walk
They would rather stay indoors and squalk
But wait something is falling from the sky
Little white flakes going by
There is snow on the ground
Wow 'it is all around
On the trees and every where you can see
It looks marvelous to me
Gerard has a sled called Flexible Flyer
Of which he does seldom tire
He sometimes rides belly wop
Going so fast he takes a flop
The train is crowded this special night
Wow I am having a fright
We arrive in a place called Times Square
And even more people are packed together there
All watching something up high about to fall
Wishing a Happy New Year to all
Bing bang bash!!
Cling clang crash!!
Ding dang dash!!
Fling fang flash!!
No dream...a nightmare
Woke up with a scare
Bad men from town
Breaking door down
Grabbing Momma and me
And other puppies three
Putting us in separate cages
While Momma growls and rages
Suddenly I cannot see
A covering flung over me
Frightened and all alone
Can only whimper and moan
Commentary...
PU-NIM THE Shar-Pei is thrown overboard on his
way to the dog wrestling world championships
In Overboard pushed out at sea
It’s not looking very good for me
Got to make it all the way to land
Where on my four paws I can stand
It comes down now to sink or swim
Lucky for me my awesome wrestling
has made me quite fit and trim alike.
pu-nim learns about the 7th Noachide law of establishing courts
To decide if the dog house
belongs to Emanuel or Daniel
the case is brought to the court
before the Judge Cocker Spaniel
Who sits and decides
from his high chair rocker
ruling over all the testimonies
Is the honorable Alter Cocker
pu-nim’s string of victories becomes a media sensation
